Labor Day weekend used to mean the last long lazy weekend of summer before the start of school. Now classes begin in August and Labor Day is something of an orphaned holiday. What do we mean when we talk about “Labor”–Labor Day, Labor Party, labor unions? Let’s reflect on the struggles and sacrifices Labor Day originally commemorated, and how much we owe to those workers of the past and the unsung work force of today.
