We call Americans who serve in the military “heroes” and thank them for their service. But the challenges faced by our veterans are often downplayed. Many veterans struggle with homelessness, injuries, permanent disabilities and PTSD, and they suffer from higher rates of suicide, substance abuse and domestic violence. How can we civilians understand their experience, and what can we all be doing to effectively help our veterans?
